Summer Program Schedule
The Kaler’s Pond Audubon Center will be hosting a series of summer programs every Sunday, June through September. All programs begin at 1:00pm and last about an hour. Learn neat new things, have fun outdoors, and get excited about nature with Kaler’s Pond Audubon! $5 per child please.

Saturday, June 18
Ponding
Help us build our freshwater fish tank by collecting and identifying creatures from Kaler’s Pond. We could find fish, bugs, frogs, snails and even some turtles! Don’t forget your water shoes!

Sunday 6/26
It’s Tough Being a Bird
Do you think birds have an easy life? All they do is fly around, sing, and build nests, right? Think again. Come learn the dangers wild birds face by competing in a fun obstacle course. Bring home your own pinecone bird feeder.  Ages 6 and up please.

Sunday 7/3
“Bee” a Friend to Pollinators
A world without pollinators would be a world without apples, blue berries, strawberries, chocolate, almonds, melons, peaches or pumpkins. Come learn about the busy bee and how to keep other pollinators safe.

Sunday 7/10
Outdoor Adventures
Learn how to stay safe in the woods by knowing about ticks, poison ivy and mosquitoes. We’ll make a pair of binoculars that we’ll test out on a nature hike around Kaler’s Pond.

Sunday 7/17
Bugs: Good Guys vs. Bad Guys
Come learn about the Lost Ladybug Project and how some good bugs will eat your pests. Then make a bug planter that really grows!

Sunday 7/24
Worms Eat Our Garbage
Worms are a man’s best friend! Learn how to turn food scraps into fertilizer by composting. Be ready to make your own worm bin to take home.

Sunday 7/31
Magical Butterflies
Everyone loves to see a butterfly rest on a flower. Come learn how caterpillars turn into beautiful butterflies like magic. After searching for caterpillars and butterflies around Kaler’s Pond, make a butterfly magnet to take home.

Sunday 8/7
Nature Sketching with Quill Pens
Make your own old-fashioned quill pen with feathers found here at Kaler’s Pond. Once they’re made we’ll take some nature notes and draw some pictures. Create your own art with your new pen and with the observations you make of animals at Kaler’s Pond.

Sunday 8/14
Homemade Recycled Paper
We’re turning the nature center into a paper-recycling factory! We will make our own paper pulp out of used paper and decorate it with dried flowers and leaves. Do your part to reduce, reuse and recycle!

Sunday 8/21
All We Needs is Trees
Did you hug a tree today? After a short hike in the woods, students pick out their own tree to study that they can share with the rest of the class at the end.  Drawings, bark and leaf rubbings and poetry about your tree will make your knowledge complete.

"Down by the Bay"
has been cancelled due to weather
and has been moved to Sunday, September 4th.
Sunday  8/28
Down by the Bay…
Meet at Webby’s beach (at the end of Bellevue Street off of Montauk Highway in Center Moriches) to do some seine netting and digging around for saltwater creatures. Who will you find? How are they different from who lives in Kaler’s Pond? Don’t forget your water shoes!

"Be Smart, Be Green"
has been cancelled on September 4th.
Sunday 9/4
Be Smart, Be Green
Let’s start the school year off right by learning how to reduce, reuse and recycle. We’ll make some recycled school supplies and learn how to green your lunch, your clothes and reduce your carbon footprint.

Sunday 9/11
Have Seeds, Will Travel
Come learn about the marvelous diversity of seeds, how they travel, and how they turn into plants. We will be tasting some of our favorite snacks that you might not realize are actually seeds.

Sunday 9/18
Bats: Fuzzy Friends or Frightening Fiends?
Bats are usually thought of as blood-sucking monsters; let’s learn why bats are furry mammals that are very similar to us. A fun bat craft made from recycled materials will be yours to take home.
