Carpenter Bee

Identification: Large, robust, blackish, about 1 inch long, resembling bumble bees. They like to excavate trees to build nests.  Sometimes they will excavate buildings like woodsheds.

* In these two photos of the "Large Carpenter Bee", it is displaying aggressive behavior. It did not like me so close to its nest. Since this bee does not sting it will hover close to the aggressor to chase it away.
